It's Save a Bat Day

We are on a coffee quest. It's a gorgeous day, the sun is shining, the sky is a beautiful shade of blue and the birds are singing... but wait. Monique hears something different above the normal din-- perhaps a little bird has fallen from it's nest? So we all stop to search and lo and behold, barely visible against the bark of the giant palm tree, his tiny claws digging in, is a bat-- no larger than 3 inches long. Every minute or two he raises his little head and lets out the tiniest little squeeky sound. Amazing that she heard it! Of course I turn into the paparrazi, delighted to have a newsworthy event to try out my new "purse camera" as I like to call it. Gigi knows that her mother will know just what to do and Sarah handles the box he is eventually put into. Next stop Davis where the bat rescue liason waits in a church parking lot to transfer him to the next step on his life journey-- Winters, and the bat rescue expert-- saving the little guys life! We believe he's a Mexican Freetail. Anyone know their bats?



***Bat update! Gigi received an email update about our little bat friend. The wonderful woman who took him in writes that he is darling. He is a Big Brown Bat and still had his umbilical cord attached. He's doing well, is a good little eater, and squeaks to be fed about every 3 hours - just as he should. She says they call him big foot because Big Brown Bat pups have large feet compared to the body. She adds that she can't promise that he'll survive, but doesn't see any outward signs to cause worry.
